White sailboats on Wannsee lake near Berlin
Beyond the inner-city Spree, Berlin boat trips reach the Havel lakes, Wannsee and Potsdam, longer, greener excursions through forest-lined water that are better for a half- or full-day out than a quick sightseeing loop.

Not every Berlin boat trip is about landmarks. Head west or south-west and the city opens into a chain of lakes and forest-lined waterways. Here you swap the government quarter for open water, white sails and lakeside beer gardens. It is a slower, greener side of Berlin that many visitors never see.

This guide covers the boat trips beyond the central Spree: the Havel river, the Wannsee lake and the pretty route down to Potsdam.

What lakes and rivers can you cruise near Berlin?

Beyond the city-centre Spree, you can cruise the Havel river, the large Wannsee and Tegel lakes, and the waterways down to Potsdam. These trips are longer and more scenic than a quick sightseeing loop, and they run mainly in the warmer months.

They suit a relaxed half-day or full-day out rather than a fast highlights tour. For inner-city sights, stick with a Spree river cruise.

Can you take a boat trip to Wannsee?

Yes. Wannsee is a broad lake on the Havel in south-west Berlin, famous for its lido, sailing clubs and regular lake cruises. Boats loop the shoreline and pass grand villas, forest and open water.

It is Berlin’s summer playground, so it is busiest and best on a warm, clear day. Pack a swimsuit if you fancy a dip at the famous beach afterwards.

Can you take a boat from Berlin to Potsdam?

Yes. In the warmer months, excursion boats run down the Havel between Berlin and Potsdam, taking a few hours each way. The route passes the Glienicke Bridge, the Cold War “Bridge of Spies”, and a string of lakeside palaces.

It is far slower than the train, which is exactly the point. You are paying for the scenery. Our Berlin to Potsdam boat trip guide has the details.

What about multi-day river cruises?

If you have searched for river cruises from Berlin and found week-long trips to Prague, those are a different world. Multi-day cruises are multi-night voyages on large river ships, often along the Elbe, booked through cruise lines rather than local operators.

They are holidays in their own right, priced in the hundreds or thousands. We explain the difference in multi-day river cruises from Berlin.

Lakes trip or city cruise: how to choose

Choose a lakes or Potsdam trip when you want nature, open water and a relaxed pace, and you have a half-day or more to spare. Choose a central sightseeing cruise when you want landmarks and you are short on time.

For a middle path that stays in the city but lasts longer, the 3.5-hour Spree cruise runs from Spandau in the leafy west into the historic centre.

Plan your Berlin lakes escape

Berlin’s lakes are a lovely change of pace from the busy centre. These routes are seasonal and weather-dependent, so check timetables before you build a day around them. Browse the water trips we track in our all boat tours section and pick your escape.
